According to an estimate, each year about over 16,000 people die from lung diseases which cause lungs to not work properly each year. The causes are various, mostly from exposure to certain types of jobs that can be risky for lung health.
The following occupations place workers in a high risk group for numerous illness and diseases. However, most types of occupational lung diseases are preventable if workers follow simple control measures. The risk of exposing to toxic chemical, exhaust, and dust will minimize.
Automotive Industry
Workers in the automobile industry, especially auto-body repair, can suffer from asthma as auto spray-on paints are the culprit of severe breathing troubles. In addition, they can create allergies or irritate skin. Therefore, gloves, respirators, and ventilation are essential.

Textiles

Byssinosis or brown lung disease, is caused by exposure to cotton dust from upholstery, socks, bed linens, towels, or clothes in inadequately ventilate working environments.
Construction

It is risky for workers’ lungs when they inhale dust in demolitions or renovations. Some common diseases include lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma.
Firefighting

Many chemicals may be present in a burning building and even toxic materials and asbestos after the fire is out. Firefighters can inhale smoke and chemicals which are dangerous to their lungs.
Manufacturing

Factory workers are more likely to suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as exposed to dust, chemicals, and gases everyday.
Mining

Miners without using dust-filtering masks when working are at higher risk for many lung diseases than the others.
Transportation

For those who work in transportation industry, diesel exhaust is the biggest factor causing lung diseases. Delivery truck drivers and railroad industry workers should stay out of the direct line of diesel exhaust and wear protective masks.
